ARTBOOK @ MoMA PS1 is pleased to present a panel discussion organized by Tom Tom Magazine, the only print magazine in the world about female drummers. The magazine’s founder/editor Mindy Abovitz will moderate a discussion of media makers and media shakers with panelists Andre Torres of Wax Poetics magazine and Yuka C. Honda of Cibo Matto and Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. The panel will consider the past, present and future of the political nature of music and how it is or isn’t represented in the media, touching on the future of print, the direction of web based media and the new ways we navigate ethics and authenticity on the Internet. Mindy Abovitz is the Editor and Creator of Tom Tom Magazine, the only print magazine in the world about female drummers. Tom Tom is full color magazine based out of NYC that is currently distributed globally and is carried by Guitar Centers Nationwide. She hopes to impact the music industry through media, events, showcases, panels and community interactions and see 45% increase of female drummers in the next ten years. Tom Tom has a feminist mission and seeks to raise awareness about female percussionists from all over the world and hopes to inspire women and girls of all ages to drum, while strengthening and building the community of otherwise fragmented female musicians. www.tomtommag.com

– Andre Torres (Wax Poetic)

Andre Torres is the Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of Wax Poetics magazine, a quarterly publication dedicated to vintage and contemporary jazz, funk, soul, Latin, hip-hop, reggae, blues, and R&B. He is also the co-founder of Wax Poetics Records, currently home to artists Kendra Morris and Adrian Younge. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and three children.

– Yuka C. Honda (Chimera Music)

Yuka C. Honda is a Japanese musician and producer residing in New York. She is the most known for the band Cibo Matto, which she co-founded with Miho Hatori in 1994, in which Honda created a unique one-man band sound by triggering samples ‘live’. They have recently reunited and will release new album in 2013. Honda has released three solo albums (on the Tzadik label) and produced If By Yes (her ethereal pop project), as well as recordings by Sean Lennon and, most recently, Martha Wainwright. She also co-produces YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BAND with Sean Lennon. She also works with Artists Against Fracking with Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon.

– Peter Ferraro (East Village Radio)

Peter Ferraro is currently the General Manager, Head of Programming and a partner at East Village Radio Dot Com. Before that Peter served briefly as Publisher of The Fader helping to evolve it into a full-fledged music magazine. Peter was also at Time4 Media a division of the former AOLTime Warner working as VP of Advertising on the Transworld Publications titles Peter spent close to 10 years as Advertising Director and Publisher of The Source Magazine during a time leading up to Hip-Hop’s commercial success. Peter lives in Manhattan and has the best dog in the world.
