Women On The Loose

Tom Tom Magazine will be tabling this sweet show full of female drummers. Come out and buy your loved ones Tom Tom t-shirts, magazines, bling, etc and come say hi!

Get your groove on with four of NYC’s most individual and inventive female-fronted bands at the inaugural Women on the Loose: A Winter Rock Festival.

Hosted by Brooklyn pop band Melissa Li & the Barely Theirs, the event celebrates a new generation of women songwriters and musicians who have forged prolific careers for themselves in one of the city’s most competitive fields. The evening features music from Mitten, The Pushovers, …Chelsea Z, and host Melissa Li & the Barely Theirs.

Though not as large in scope as other attempts in New York and abroad, the festival empowers and brings together a community of female independent artists through performance.

Never been to Union Hall? Well, it totally rocks! In addition to an intimate downstairs performance space, Union Hall has a fully stocked bar, tasty grub, and even bocce ball upstairs!

Tickets for the event are $7 and can be purchased at the door or at www.ticketweb.com.

Melissa Li & the Barely Theirs (9pm)
Melissa Li & The Barely Theirs is a pop/rock outfit that channels funk, blues, and country. An All-American band at heart, MLBT has the rowdy feminist edge of Ani DiFranco and the sugar-high pop sensibility of Sara Bareilles. Most recently, their latest single “The Beginning” is a 2010 OUTMusic Award Nominee for Outstanding Rock Song. Melissa’s music has been lauded by the press, including Curve and Bitch Magazine. www.melissali.com

Mitten (10pm)
Mitten began as the Brooklyn synthesis of singer Maia Macdonald and producer Joanna Katcher. Percussionist Ryan Fitch, fresh from a SXSW appearance, completes this shockingly elegant, highly stylized electro-pop trio. Since their debut single early in 2010, listeners and critics alike have been similarly astounded by Mitten’s unexpected union of post-rock intricacy and pre-rock intimacy, delivered with all of the breathless urgency of 80’s New Wave. www.mynameismitten.com

The Pushovers (8:15pm)
The Pushovers are a Smart-Pop Folk Rock band based in Brooklyn, DC, and Baltimore. All seasoned songwriters with solo careers, Mara, Nancy, and Liz sing vocals, beat box, and breakdance. OK only Nancy breakdances and that sometimes ends her up at the ER. With requisite political angst and cynical wit, The Pushovers is an all-girl, all-lesbian, all-awesome band that have played colleges, festivals, and venues from San Francisco to NYC. www.thepushoversband.com

Chelsea Z (7:30pm)
Chelsea Z is a standout performer: distinct and infectious. This “one-woman musical dynamo” mixes introspective lyrics with guitar work that is full of life and hope. Drawing comparisons to a five-piece orchestra, her music is as intricate and percussive as Kaki King and as passionate as the words she sings. www.chelseaz.com
