Technique Tuesday: More Jazz Strokes

Adding to the brush pattern from last week, we’re going to add a common jazz groove to the mix. You hear this all of the time in jazz music. Maybe it’s on a ride, hi-hat, or whatever. You can also play it with your right hand on the snare, while the other is “stirring the soup.”
Counts 1 & 3 plus inner notes will be played where the brush is in the picture. For counts 2 & 4, think of swatting a fly up near the top of your drum. This’ll create an accented effect.
Add some bass and hi-hat, and there ya go.
