Asobi Seksu: Featuring Yuki Chikudate and James Hanna, Asobi Seksu (colloquial Japanese for “playful sex”) released its self-titled debut album in 2004 to significant critical acclaim, winning rave reviews from The New York Times, Nylon, Under the Radar, YRB, and XLR8R, among others. The band scored a No. 1 video on mtvU’s Dean’s List with the song “Walk on the Moon,” garnered a Top 10 spot on CMJ’s radio charts, and became an instant favorite in the New York City scene, playing packed shows at the Bowery Ballroom, Knitting Factory, and Mercury Lounge.

Sara Benincasa: Sara Benincasa is an award-winning comedian, writer and host of the popular podcast, Sex and Other Human Activities, available on iTunes. Her outspoken, sexually-charged comedy has won praise from the Chicago Tribune, CNN, The Guardian, and The New York Times, and has earned her an ECNY (Emerging Comedian of New York) Award and a Webby nomination. Sara has a new book out, Agorafabulous, based on her critically acclaimed solo show about panic attacks and agoraphobia.

North Highlands: North Highlands—the place, not the band—is, as Brenda Malvini puts it, “a gnarly suburb trapped in time. It sounds like a beautiful name but it’s not a beautiful place.” Located just outside of Sacramento, North Highlands once housed a military base, and also Brenda, who relocated to New York City as quickly as the town would let her out. She went to NYU, where the majority of North Highlands—we’re talking about the band now—also went, all of them “graduating or not graduating,” as they put it, a couple of years ago. Brenda was writing songs, but keeping them secret, until a friend booked her a show and said, “do it.” Unable to resist, Brenda enlisted her friends to fill out the bill. Mike Barron helped out on guitar, Jasper Berg on percussion, Daniel Stewart on guitar, violin, and mandolin and Andy Kasperbauer on bass. The result of the show was the band, and later, their debut LP, Wild One, which was released on October 18, 2011.

Little, Big: Little,Big is a musical and artistic collaboration between singer/artist Dana Young and musician/composer Chuck Meyer. They met on a street corner in Brooklyn in 2007. She thought, “That’s my bassist.” He thought, “That’s my singer.” It was musical love at first sight. Dana’s wide range and pop sensibility meshed perfectly with Chuck’s hook-driven lead bass. After adding Chuck’s drum loops and Dana’s illustrations, Little,Big emerged as a new, more playful take on being a rock band. They’ve spent the last two years making music for dancing to in your most awesome pajamas. Their debut album, Pins and Narwhals, is coming out on May 15.
