Seoul, South Korea, band 3rd Line Butterfly (3호선 버터플라이) is thrilling to watch. The group has been playing together for 10 years and brings air-tight indie music. Even without realizing it, the band’s rhythms will make you dance. The group swept us away at the 2018 Barcelona music festival, Primavera Sound. Watch the video of Tom Tom chatting with the group — and then sneak in a few extra questions for the band’s spectacular drummer, Hyun Jung Seo (서현정).

Tom Tom: How did you begin to play drums?
Hyun Jung Seo: I used to be a gymnast until my third year of high school. But I was hurt so badly that I had to choose something different, which was a drum, by chance.
How long have you been playing drums for?
Since the age of twenty… For fifteen years.
What is your favorite part about playing drums?
The sweat.
And your favorite part of your drumset?
My pedal. The brand is Iron Cobra. It’s covered with chrome. I can see myself in the pedal.
What inspires your lyrics and drum beats?
Lyrics, just whatever comes to mind. For the beats though, I make the rhythm of the beats as dancey as possible. I want people to dance because I love dancing very much. Even though I am pretty bad at dancing. I just really love dancing.

Tom Tom: 어떻게 드럼을 시작하게 되었는지 당신의 이야기를 해주시겠어요?
Hyun Jung Seo: 저는 원래 운동선수였어요. 고3때까지. 근데 갑자기 크게 다치면서 뭔가 다른 전공을 택해야 했는데, 그게 그냥 드럼이었어요. 우연히.
드럼은 치기 시작한지 얼마나 되었나요?
20살.. 15년
15년이요. 와우. 드럼을 치는데 가장 좋은 점이 뭔가요?
땀나는거요.
좋네요..제일 좋아하는 악기나 드럼 파트는요? 예를 들면 어떤 스틱을 좋아한다던지?
페달이요. 페달이 중요해서 되게 이쁜거로 샀거든요..리미티드 에디션
어떤 종류의 페달인가요?
아이언 코브라에서 나온 크롬으로 은장된 것이에요. 제가 비쳐서 보여요.
마지막 질문으로, 가사는 어떻게 쓰고, 드럼 비트를 어떻게 만드나요?
비트는 무조건 춤추기 편한 비트를 하고, 가사는…몰라요…나오는데로.. 그리고 춤 추는 것을 좋아해요. 그런데 춤은 잘 추지는 못해요. 그래도 춤 추는 게 좋아요.
