Tom Tom Magazine: Reason that you started playing drums?
Jacqueline Pablo: My friend and now lead singer/guitarist of The Studiofix, Paco, called me one day and told me she was starting a band with a couple of her friends. She needed a drummer. I did not know how to play the drums. I said yes. And the rest is history!
TTM: Do you play any other instruments?
JP: Yes I play the guitar, bass, and a bit of piano.
TTM: If so … how does that effect your drumming?
JP: I think knowing how to play other instruments is beneficial to my style of drumming. When I can hear and understand what everyone else in the band is doing, I can be more creative when writing a backbeat to a song.
TTM: What’s your favorite part about playing drums?
JP: My favorite part about playing drums is being out of my element- playing in front of people is out of my element, playing with different people is out of my element, playing different styles of music is out of my element. Being out of my element means being challenged. I LOVE being challenged when it comes to playing the drums, no matter how frustrated it makes me.
TTM: Most notable show you ever played?
JP: Definitely our friend’s wedding. There were elements of traditional Chinese weddings, like dragon dancers. There were drunk, dancing moms, people came up on the stage and danced with us the whole time, Kel’s (our bassist) bass wasn’t working, and we almost got shut down because everyone was so rowdy… It was awesome.
TTM: Who are your favorite drummers?
JP : John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Questlove, all the drummers that could play with James Brown, DAYUM!
TTM: If you could change one thing about the drums what would it be?
JP : They would magically be able to break themselves down and hop into my trunk.
TTM: Where do you shop for your drum gear?
JP: Online or Guitar Center.
TTM: What are some of your other hobbies / interests?
JP: Making beats on Reason/ProTools, recording, & reading.
TTM: Who are some of your favorite lady drummers right now?
JP: Sheila E
TTM: Who are some of your favorite bands right now?
JP: Passion Pit, Born Ruffians, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Badu, Led Zep, Beatles, etc.
