Drummer’s Perspective: A Photographic Insight Into the World of Drummers
By David Phillips (A&R Marketing, 2010)
If you’re waiting for your next issue of Tom Tom and you find yourself in need of a hit of drum porn, you may want to check out the new photo book, Drummer’s Perspective. David Phillips compiled images he took in recent years of high-profile professional drummers playing some of the hugest concerts and venues. He really captures what the drummer experiences onstage — like looking out on thousands of people or playing in front of flaming pyrotechnics.
As Phillips points out, taking good photos of drummers is difficult because they tend to be in the back under bad lighting and the cymbals and other equipment onstage can get in the way of a good shot. He managed to gain unique access behind the scenes and was able to capture the drummers in all their glory. The camera gets so close you’ll practically have to wipe the sweat from your brow. Drummer Cora Dunham (Prince) shown above and drummer Cherisse Osei (The Faders) below are both featured in his book. – Rebecca DeRosa
