Corin Tucker’s solo debut 1,000 years harkens the beginning of new era for the former Sleater-Kinney member and all-around bad ass riot grrrl. It’s been a few years now since the legendary band split ways and much has changed. It would be contrived to wholly cite Tucker’s mom-hood as the origin of her new, more subdued sound, but it unsurprisingly and rightfully, does play a part. She, herself, has been quoted describing the album as a “middle-aged mom record”, though I wouldn’t go so far just yet. Tucker does move into more contemplative reflection however, articulating new perspectives, rather than groping at gut-level emotion that painted many Sleater-Kinney releases.
Yet, there is an undeniable momentum that gathers as you are whisked into the jangling build-up and crashings of “Half A World Away” and the album’s first single”Doubt”. Tucker scrambles, for a moment, back into familiar territory, exercising that prolific Northwest wail cradled in the gritty snarls of a guitar. Tucker also did well in snagging Sara Lund of Unwound fame; the percussion is both athletic and emotive. And so it goes throughout 1,000 Years as the listener is teased with quickly stilted instrumental outbursts. Tucker is well aware of her musical shift, moving cooly between the new-found singer-songwriter vibe and her riot grrl roots; as the closing track, “Miles Away” dually notes. “Now the sky is brand new” she croons over a slow melodic piano, ushering us out quietly. Oh yea. And Sara Lund drums all over this album. Which we love too.
Kill Rock Stars will release 1,000 Years this Tuesday, October 5th.
Tucker and co. will also be hitting up the two coasts with a slew of October shows!
