Lisa Schonberg I will be curating the “One question, one drummer” interview series for Tom Tom – a series of brief interviews with female drummers, each accompanied by a portrait of the featured drummer. It’s been exciting for Tom Tom to feature the work of visual artists who are admired by female drummers, and the artists themselves have been very much excited about the opportunity to portray these inspiring musicians. I am presenting each drummer I interview with a choice of two interview topics — one on media representation, and the other on style & technique. I grew up a band geek in Staten Island, NY, and later moved to Olympia WA to study insects in grad school. I currently live in Portland, OR, where I teach private drum students, work at Rock Camp, practice entomology, and play drums in Explode into Colors, Kickball, STLS, and Sielaff/Schonberg.
Temim Fruchter is a Brooklyn-based drummer who taught herself to play at the ripe old age of 26. She played her first show only a few weeks after she picked up her first drum stick. Now the drummer for The Shondes, she spends much of her time working on deepening her skills, building her chops, learning about driving the rhythm in a rock band, and writing and reading about different ways to bang on things. Temim has spent a lot of time thinking about what it takes to be a confident and kick-ass gigging drummer when you didn’t quite expect that that’s what you were gonna be. And she plans to write about some of that here.
sts I am sts, program director for the Portland, Oregon Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls and drummer in the band STLS. Drummer 2 Drummer interviews feature an interview exchange between younger female drummers who may or may not know each other. This will hopefully inspire and encourage girl drummers of all ages around the world–there are girls playing the drums everywhere!
Leslie Henkel Leslie curates the “Crash-Crash-Craft!” series, mostly because she is nosy and likes crafts/crafty people. This is also why she is a member of “Bags For The People,” a rad non-profit that hosts bag-sewing workshops all over New York City (and now in Jamaica!), hates Garbage Island, reads your diary when you’re away, and sometimes sews drumstick bags at Tom Tom events just for fun. Leslie also writes a serialized cozy mystery zine set in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, starring hipsters, anarchist freegans, “Chad P.”, and super-sleuth Tight Pantsy Drew–who also editorializes over at A Mutual Respect.com!
